Artist
in Residence Program
Guest Artist Series: 2006-07
School Year
The Artist in Residence program offers
a variety of artists to all arts teachers
in the Martin County School District
to enhance planned curriculum units
for students. Artists provide up to
a 90-minute presentation/demonstration
(45-minutes for elementary) to classes
throughout the Martin County School
District . Artists provided the Arts
Council with topics and grade levels
they are willing to work with. Teachers
select from the list of artists, topics
and grade levels. The Arts Council
then assigns artists to classrooms
and schools as funds allow. The Arts
Council will pay the fee for background
check for each artist. Artists may
be assigned to multiple schools.
Picture
People Program
Picture People program is a curriculum-based
elementary art program which seeks
to develop a child's appreciation
for art from an interdisciplinary
approach. Volunteers take prints of
museum art into any of the classrooms
once a month to discuss content, style,
etc. with the children while encouraging
creative, imaginative responses. The
program runs from October through
April allowing for seven prints to
be introduced to the students.
Marvin S.
Cone High School Juried Art Program
Each year the Arts Council presents
the Marvin S. Cone Annual High School
Juried Art Show to recognize the artistic
talents of Martin County high school
students. The art teachers at each
school select each piece of artwork
for entry in the exhibit. It is a
highly competitive process; the categories
for cash awards are photography, painting,
sculpture, mixed media/assemblage,
printmaking, and drawing. The Awards
Reception is held at the Court House
Cultural Center Gallery. Additionally
each high school principal and the
School Superintendent select pieces
to purchase that become a part of
a permanent collection at their respective
high schools and the Superintendent's
office.
About Marvin S. Cone:
Twenty one years ago, a local writer,
poet, artist, entrepreneur and educator
named Marvin S. Cone was inspired
by the creativity of Martin County
students. He sought to encourage young
people to even greater achievements
by transforming the annual high school
art exhibit into an event that truly
recognized student's artistic accomplishments.
We gratefully remember Mr. Cone for
his unrelenting enthusiasm for young
people, for the arts, and for his
timeless efforts in making this event
what it is today. We honor Marvin
S. Cone by dedicating this exhibit
in his name.
