10/15/2007 - mARTies Nominated Awards Announced

Stuart, Florida: The Arts Council serving Stuart and Martin County is pleased to announce the mARTies nominated awards during the celebration of the arts that took place at Sandhill Cove, Palm City on October 11, 2007. Attendees of the event included artists, business supporters, arts-related organizations, volunteers, young artists and performers, their parents, their teachers, and all the other art lovers.

The talented nominees in the five categories were judged in three ways: artistic excellence, civic responsibility and leadership in improving the quality of life in our community. Those receiving the mARTies nominated awards were:

Outstanding Volunteer for the Arts: Rita Jenkins-Gaines
After receiving a bachelors in Fine Arts, this talented dancer and choreographer moved from Ohio University to the Big Apple, then to Martin County. Ms. Jenkins-Gaines co-created “Arts Impact” to help fundraise for the Pink Tie Gala, choreographed a modern dance for a student auditioning for Orlando Ballet’s Summer program, and helped produce shows for Shiloh Theatrical Productions and other local theaters.

Outstanding Student Performing Artist: Megan Moran
16 year old Megan Moran has performed on TV and at Shea Stadium. She has been chosen as “Palm Beach Idol” and named “Treasure Coast Idol” by both the judges and the audiences. Besides music, she is a 4.0 student in the IB program. Her theater appearances include Star Struck, Maltz, Pineapple, Barn and others.

Outstanding Student Visual Artist: Ellen Krebs
Ellen Krebs received recognition from her instructors as a freshman, and by the time she was a junior, her artwork was displayed at the Lighthouse Center for the Arts. Her talents are exhibited in paintings, drawing, photography, collages, sculpting and two and three dimensional pieces. She spent her last summer helping children learn new arts and crafts and is involved with the Think Big Program for Big Brothers/Big Sisters

Outstanding Visual Artist: Brenda Leigh
Brenda Leigh many times paints for free, and saw such promise in our previously-neglected bandshell that she asked for and received permission to paint it for free in 2001. In her words, “Public art must tell its story in an instant,” she says, “as most people only see it when they are driving.” She is currently painting the beautiful mural on the Esplande on Colorado’s entrance to downtown Stuart.

Outstanding Performing Artist: Peter Jones
Musical Director Peter Jones is an accomplished pianist since the age of 15, and he has been music director for over 50 musicals. His latest honor is landing permission by MTI for the premier of “Rent, the School Edition.” Recently, he won first place in Atlanta for Best Overall Performance and Best Technical Achievement at MTI International competition. He has offered thousands of dollars in scholarship to local students and believes that all children should be offered the opportunity to gain confidence and self-esteem in all disciplines of the performing arts.

The mARTies celebration this year recognizes and honors a variety of one-of-a-kind talents and commitments to the arts. The named award recipients demonstrate in a glance the depth and breadth the word arts can convey:

Lifetime Achievement in the Arts: Janeen Mason
Janeen Mason is a fine artist as well as an author and illustrator of children’s picture books. Her original artwork is in the collections of Burt Reynolds and Reba McEntire. Most recently she has received acclaim for her “Ocean Commotion: Sea Turtles” book, published in 2006. She has been recognized with the United States Maritime Literature Award. Janeen has also been appointed to the Florida Arts Council by Senate President Ken Pruitt.

Excellence in Arts Education: Karen Haines
Karen Haines is the visual arts teacher at Jensen Beach Elementary and holds a Florida Art Education certificate. Karen is a leader among fellow elementary art teachers, initiating a workshop program to stir the creativity of the teachers during early release days. She works and in hand with Frank Spera, who is the Picture Person at Jensen Beach Elementary School.

Philanthropy in the Arts: OPUS Boosters
Martin County High School’s internationally known award winning chorale group is supported by their parents, alumni and friends. They make up the Opus Boosters. In celebration of Director Ron Corbin’s 25th anniversary at the school, the boosters initiated and created the Ronald L Corbin Scholarship Fund. The fund, in 2007, presented its second scholarship to a graduating OPUS member. It is for this philanthropic idea that OPUS Boosters are being given this award and that excellence in arts education will be available for generations to come.

Arts Leadership: Cecilia Serra
Cecilia Serra’s devotion to the art of dance has resulted in a stronger community. Her leadership in converting a private dance studio to a vibrant nonprofit organization, Florida Arts & Dance Company, is deserving of distinction. Early on, FADC reached out to provide programs for special needs children and to children in Indiantown, proving that dance is valuable not only for physical development, but in improving self-esteem and poise. Although Cecilia is now retired from FADC, her inspiration for dance and love for children of all backgrounds continues.

Corporate Leadership: The Palm Beach Post
Nonprofit arts groups need corporate leadership. The Palm Beach Post is a true believer in the arts and what they bring to a community. The Post pledges financial support, in-kind advertising support and volunteer leadership. With the Post, their corporate leadership is more than just the money, it is the attitude to help worthwhile projects get off the ground and flourish.

Special Recognition: Houston Cuozzo Group
Just over a year ago, the summer interns at Houston Cuozzo Group were given an assignment: re-design Memorial Park in Downtown Stuart to address drainage problems, the need for performing arts space and to create a space that would become a special green space in downtown. Three designs were presented to key community leaders for consideration. It is the start of a great renovation of an important civic space that will foster pride among residents.

A video production for the event was produced by Martin County High School’s TV production program, lead by their instructor, Jeff Younglove. Star Struck Performing Arts Center presented special entertainment midway through the program.

The Arts Council thanks the many sponsors, the dedicated co-chairs and volunteers, donors for the silent auction, and many people who volunteered their expertise along the way to make this event happen.

The State Touring Program provides professional performing artists to Florida non-profit organizations and any units of city, county, or state government, including school boards, through fee support to present the performers. The Marvin S. Cone 22nd Annual High School Juried Art Show recognizes the artistic talents of our high school students with an Awards Reception on Thursday, May 1, 2008 at the Court House Cultural Center Gallery. This inspiring exhibition features artwork by students from Martin County, South Fork, Jensen Beach High Schools and The Pine School. Their teachers, parents, school officials and sponsors of the event will be present for the awards presentation.
The high school student artwork will be at the Court House Cultural Center Gallery through May 16.

“For the past 22 years the Arts Council has supported the High School Juried Art Show featuring the best and brightest students in our schools as a means to encourage their pursuit of creativity and the fine arts,” quoted Nancy Turrell, Arts Council Executive Director.

The art teachers at each school select each piece of artwork for entry in the exhibit. It is a highly competitive process; the categories for cash awards are photography, painting, sculpture, mixed media/assemblage, and drawing. Additionally each high school principal and the School Superintendent, Dr. Sara Wilcox, select pieces to purchase that become a part of a permanent collection at their respective high schools and the Superintendent’s office. For the last several years, the Elliott Museum and the Supervisor of Elections have also purchased artwork.

The Court House Cultural Center Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The sponsors for the student exhibits are The Palm Beach Post; Fox, Wackeen, Dungey, Beard, Sobel, Bush, and McCluskey LLP; and Palm City Art & Frame.
