Off-Broadway audiences gave this electrifying black comedy standing ovations. Two grown orphan brothers live in a dilapidated house in North Philly, deserted in childhood by an unfaithful father and the death of their mother. Older brother Treat provides for his “innocent to the ways of the world” brother Phillip through petty thievery. When Treat kidnaps a businessman (wink-wink), Treat sees an opportunity for a way out of their dead-end life by holding the man for ransom. The businessman, Harold, then turns the table on the two brothers in ways completely unexpected but ultimately very satisfying. “A weird, wonderful thriller filled with suspense, pathos and packing an emotional wallop.”—WMCA Radio. “ . . . tense, moving and funny as anything you’re likely to see . . . Orphans is violent, shocking and profane. And it’s wonderful.”—The Miami Herald.
