Oscar Wilde’s best-known and best-loved play, “The Importance of Being Earnest,” has been delighting audiences around the globe since its premiere over 100 years ago. The farcical comedy about mistaken identities, secret marriage engagements, and lovers’ entanglements offers some of the wittiest lines ever written and is considered a literary masterpiece.

The play focuses on two men, Jack and Algernon, both of whom lead double lives, each aided by a fictional alter ego called “Ernest.” As Jack’s double life catches up with him, this comedy of manners offers a critique of Victorian society, weaving a complex and clever plot with the rapid-fire wit of its eccentric and charming characters.

Wilde uses satire to ridicule the cultural norms of marriage and love mindsets which were very rigid during the Victorian Age, especially apropos of English upper class lifestyles. The play is full of quote worthy one-liners, witty repartee and deliciously satirical ideas about society and polite behavior — yet with human relationships that are still completely relevant to our society today.

“The Importance of Being Earnest,” directed by Heidi Condon, is a delight starting with the first cucumber sandwich. A.C.T.’s cast of David Tanner, Sean Birkett, Clelia Patrizio, Shauna Stone, Megan Pollak, Saul Bronstein, Kristal Eckhardt and David Pierce will bring the show to life for six performances: April 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, and May 1. Shows are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m.; Sunday matinees are at 3:00 p.m.
