Call for Artists | ArtsFest Picnic Table Mural Project

MartinArts is seeking artists to transform picnic tables into works of art! In partnership with Martin County’s Art in Public Places, artists transform ordinary picnic tables into original murals on site at ArtsFest on Saturday & Sunday, February 11 & 12, 2023 held at Gazebo Park in downtown Stuart, FL. A two-day celebration of the arts, ArtsFest attracts approximately 10,000 attendees each year since its inception in 1988. The completed picnic table murals will be auctioned on February 24, 2023, at the Court House Cultural Center, with proceeds to benefit MartinArts and Project Lift.

Project Overview

  • A stipend of $200 will be paid to competing artists to develop, design, and paint original artwork on picnic tables.
  • A People’s Choice Award of $500 will be awarded to one (1) artist at the end of the festival.
  • All work must be the artist's original design and not taken directly from copyrighted materials. Artists may take inspiration from imagery as a part of their designs, but it must be significantly altered and the artist's original concept. 
  • Murals may not contain any advertising or marketing.
  • All designs must be family friendly and therefore appropriate for all viewing audiences
  • All works must be two-dimensional; no protruding objects may be affixed
  • Artists will each be provided a standard size picnic table (approx. 59” x 72”) primed with Kilz 2 all-purpose primer.  Artist must bring their own supplies as needed – paint, brushes, markers, tools, etc. An assortment of paint and tools will also be provided but types of paints will vary dramatically, from donated household latex paints to spray paints. No colors or types of paints are guaranteed.
  • Picnic table murals can be worked on Saturday 8AM-5PM and Sunday at 8AM-3PM.  Tables must be completed by 3PM on Sunday.
  • Overnight security of event site is provided.

Who Can Participate?

  • Anyone can apply to design and paint a picnic table mural, including both amateur and professional artists—as well as art and educational institutions, businesses, youth groups, and beyond.
  • Artists of all backgrounds are encouraged to participate.
  • We strongly encourage local artists to apply but artists may be from any geographic location. Any related travel and/or lodging expenses must be covered by the artist.

Submission Guidelines

Email the following information to ArtsFest@MartinArts.org OR fill out the form below by January 31:

  • Contact Information: Name, mailing address, email address and phone number.
  • Five (5) images representative of your previous artwork (JPEG format, 2-D work only) Artists working in teams must each submit five (5) images.
  • Help us get to know you! Be sure to include a brief bio, Artist’s Statement, Resume/CV, and links to your website and social media.
  • Accepted artists will be notified no later than February 5
