Excellence in Arts Education
This year’s Excellence in Arts Education honorees remind us of the profound impact dedicated arts educators can have on the lives of their students and the strength of their communities. Kerry Rocks has built a career around helping students discover their voice—both literally and figuratively—through music, performance, discipline, and a lifelong commitment to artistic excellence.
Music has been part of Kerry’s life for as long as she can remember. Raised in a family and community where music was valued, she was fortunate to have mentors who recognized her gifts and encouraged her to develop them. Her professional journey began remarkably early, when she was contracted at just 15 to perform a full season with Palm Beach Opera. That experience opened her eyes to the power of artistic excellence, mentorship, and lifelong learning.
Since then, the arts have remained more than a profession for Kerry—they have been a calling. Her career has encompassed performance, vocal instruction, vocology, choral direction, musical theatre, and arts education. She is a certified private vocal teacher, holds a Certificate in Vocology from NYU, and earned a Certificate of Excellence in Vocal Pedagogy from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. Since 2011, she has also operated a thriving voice studio, helping students develop not only their musical abilities but also the confidence to share their unique voices with the world.
For Kerry, the greatest measure of success is not simply an award, scholarship, or professional accomplishment. It is seeing a student discover a strength they did not know they possessed.

Over the years, Kerry’s students have earned substantial scholarships, pursued professional careers in music and the performing arts, and developed lifelong connections to the arts. Her choirs have earned Superior ratings year after year, contributing to the continued growth of her programs. But perhaps the moments she treasures most are the ones that cannot be measured by a score or a trophy—hearing a student say, “You have changed my life,” or “You helped me believe in myself.”
Kerry believes the arts have the power to bring people together while celebrating the qualities that make each person unique. In schools and communities, she sees the arts as essential to developing collaboration, discipline, creativity, compassion, and a sense of identity and pride.
Her approach to teaching is rooted in leading by example. Kerry continues to perform, study, and grow as an artist, demonstrating to her students that learning never ends. She encourages young people to pursue excellence while understanding that success in the arts is about much more than talent. It requires hard work, perseverance, collaboration, and service.
Above all, she wants every student to understand one fundamental truth: their voice matters.
Kerry also sees mentorship as a way of honoring those who invested in her. Among the mentors who helped shape her journey are Ronald L. Corbin, Kamal Khan, Virginia Zeani, and her father, Randolph Rocks. Their guidance and belief in her continue to inspire her commitment to giving back.
For Kerry, investing in the arts means investing in people—their stories, traditions, creativity, confidence, and capacity to connect with others. She remains a passionate advocate for arts education and community arts engagement, mentoring students who go on to pursue careers in music, education, and the performing arts.
Her hope for her own legacy is simple yet powerful: to have used the gifts she was given to help others discover their own.

Even after years of teaching and performing, Kerry continues to be driven by the transformative power of music. Every rehearsal, performance, and lesson is an opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life. Her dedication reflects a deep gratitude for the opportunities and mentors who shaped her—and a commitment to ensuring that the next generation has those same opportunities to learn, grow, create, and find their voice.
