For decades, Patricia Burgemeister has dedicated her life to the theatre, inspiring audiences, mentoring performers, and helping generations discover the transformative power of the arts. With more than 150 productions directed and appearances in over 120 shows, Patricia’s extraordinary career has left an indelible mark on the arts community.
Her passion for theatre began at the age of seven, when she attended a professional performance of Porgy and Bess. From that moment, she knew theatre was the path she was meant to follow. Throughout her remarkable career, Patricia found fulfillment not only in performing and directing, but in the connection created between artists and audiences.
Patricia’s influence extends well beyond the stage. As a director, she often worked with young performers, encouraging them to discover their own creativity and confidence. Among the many children she directed were young performers who went on to make significant contributions to theatre in the community. She takes particular pride in knowing that she helped light a creative spark that continued to grow.
For Patricia, the arts are essential to a thriving community. She believes that without the “spice, beauty and intrigue” the arts bring to everyday life, the world would be mundane. Her commitment has always been rooted in the belief that investing in the arts is an investment in the community—and in the world around us.
Even after decades in theatre, Patricia’s passion remains unwavering. At 93, while physical limitations have brought her active theatre career to a close, her spirit and love for the arts remain as strong as ever. She hopes that her work has inspired the countless people with whom she has worked and the audiences who have shared in her performances.
Perhaps no words better capture Patricia’s philosophy than her belief that “to live in a community and world without art, is to live without air to breathe.”
Her legacy is one of creativity, generosity, mentorship, and an enduring belief in the power of theatre to enrich lives. From the stages where she performed and directed to the young artists she encouraged—including her own granddaughter and great-granddaughter—Patricia has helped ensure that the creative spark continues to be passed from one generation to the next.
The arts, Patricia says, mean “breath, soul, spirit and true life.”
