For decades, Pat Burgemeister has dedicated his life to the theatre, inspiring audiences, mentoring performers, and helping generations discover the transformative power of the arts. With more than 150 productions directed and appearances in over 120 shows, Pat’s extraordinary career has left an indelible mark on the arts community.
His passion for theatre began at the age of seven, when he attended a professional performance of Porgy and Bess. From that moment, he knew theatre was the path he was meant to follow. Throughout his remarkable career, Pat found fulfillment not only in performing and directing, but in the connection created between artists and audiences.
Pat’s influence extends well beyond the stage. As a director, he often worked with young performers, encouraging them to discover their own creativity and confidence. Among the many children he directed were young performers who went on to make significant contributions to theatre in the community. He takes particular pride in knowing that he helped light a creative spark that continued to grow.
For Pat, the arts are essential to a thriving community. He believes that without the “spice, beauty and intrigue” the arts bring to everyday life, the world would be mundane. His commitment has always been rooted in the belief that investing in the arts is an investment in the community—and in the world around us.
Even after decades in theatre, Pat’s passion remains unwavering. At 93, while physical limitations have brought his active theatre career to a close, his spirit and love for the arts remain as strong as ever. He hopes that his work has inspired the countless people with whom he has worked and the audiences who have shared in his performances.
Perhaps no words better capture Pat’s philosophy than his belief that “to live in a community and world without art, is to live without air to breathe.”
His legacy is one of creativity, generosity, mentorship, and an enduring belief in the power of theatre to enrich lives. From the stages where he performed and directed to the young artists he encouraged—including his own granddaughter and great-granddaughter—Pat has helped ensure that the creative spark continues to be passed from one generation to the next.
The arts, Pat says, mean “breath, soul, spirit and true life.”
