Barbara tells us that her creation of The Mermaid Boxes (300 so far) are the sum of everything she has seen, studied, or lived. “The name Mermaid Boxes was inspired by the spirit of the mythical creature who I believe represents wild, free, clever, bold, creative, and compassionate living. Each of the boxes is a little world I explore and then create by combining patterns, colors, textures, and images from unconventional sources to make something beautiful and useful. The themes are widely varied and often take inspiration from nature, history, literature, or places. Each box tells a story and makes room for its owner to add to the story, interactively becoming part of the creative process.”
