Susan Martin

Susan Martin’s passion for drawing and painting led her to study at the University of Texas at Austin for a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art. A significant part of her university experience was the opportunity to study photography and composition under the eminent photographer Russell Lee, best known for his work for the Farm Security Administration (FSA). Martin’s interest in the crisp textures, edges revealed by light on forms, rich darks, and tight compositions developed in photography are reflected in her brilliantly colored and detailed paintings.

Martin’s paintings are exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the state in competitive and invitational settings, and included in more than a dozen solo exhibits. In February, 2022, her entry in Florida Artists Group Annual Exhibition won Best of Show. Also in 2022, Martin concluded a 5-month exhibit at the Appleton Museum and another solo at the Polk Museum of Art.

Fifteen corporations have purchased Martin’s work for their collections, among them Chugai-Upjohn, Marriott, Southern Progress Corporation, and McGraw-Hill. It has been published in New American Paintings, and in both 2021 and 2022, along with awards, in the Artist Magazine’s Best of Acrylic Special Issues, among others.

Martin lives and works on Merritt Island, Florida, surrounded by lush vegetation which often serves as subject matter for her paintings.
