OUR HISTORY, MISSION, VALUES AND GOALS
The Indian River Pops Orchestra is one of South Florida's well-known and respected performing arts organization, and was founded on June 18th 1996 by the late Owen Seward. The organization operates as a 501(c)(3), and was formed to provide the community with cultural experiences and education through various genres of music performances.
In 1999, the IRPO began performing as a part-time orchestra in a city of fewer than one million residents, The Orchestra has grown to be one of the finest major orchestras in South Florida, serving more than 100,000 people throughout Indian River County, St. Lucie County, Martin County, and the Palm Beaches. The Orchestra currently has 50 dedicated musicians on the roster, and is currently led by Music Director Dr. Douglas P. Jewett. The orchestra is a cultural centerpiece of the community, helping to introduce our students and communities to the finest pieces of symphonic and popular music literature.
The mission of The Indian River Pops Orchestra is to provide the community with cultural and educational experiences through joy of music, acting as a catalyst in helping to present familiar classic programs as well as rarely performed, and new orchestral repertoire. Our goal is to bring together students, musicians and audiences for professional, affordable, and accessible concert experiences. We accomplish this mission by creating high quality music experiences to feed the souls of South Florida residents, to bolster the cultural economy and to educate and strengthen our next generation resulting in a community that embraces and appreciates the arts. Ultimately, we are working to educate, inspire and entertain the members of our communities.
Each season, The Orchestra offers affordable and inspiring concerts of Classics and Pops, one-of-a-kind specials and dynamic family-oriented performances. During the season we present around 8-15 concerts at several venues. The season is designed to present a wide range of music to suit many tastes and preferences.
